135. HGTV's Ben Napier on Social Media and Screen Time

Welcome to another episode of the Willoughby Hills podcast! Yes, yes, despite announcing a break from the podcast a few months ago, I am back with a new episode. For now, I am planning to record and release episodes when I have the time, when I have something to say, or when I have an interesting guest that I want to feature. This episode happens to check all of those boxes for me.

Ben Napier

On today’s episode, I welcome back to the show my first three-time guest, Ben Napier from HGTV’s Home Town, Home Town Takeover, and Home Town Kickstart.

Ben and his wife Erin first joined me on the podcast in June, 2020 to discuss how they were living and working at the height of the pandemic. Ben then returned in May, 2023 to talk about building community in small towns and bolstering American manufacturing.

I invited Ben back on the podcast this time to discuss the work he and Erin are doing with Osprey, a group they co-founded in 2023 that helps connect parents who want to limit screen time and social media access for their kids.

Ben and I discuss how our own attitudes towards social media have shifted over the last decade or so, what kids are giving up by spending time on screens, and how to have a healthy relationship with media.

To learn more about Osprey’s work, please check out their website.

I also discussed my experience with Waldorf Education, which de-emphasizes screen based learning. To learn more and find a Waldorf School near you, visit the website for the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America.
