You need to level up — get a boombox, tape your faves off FM radio, and play your mixed tape on a Walkman as you sit by the pool. That’s what I do in 2026!
I have one 1990 mixed tape where “It must have been love” by Roxette is rudely interrupted by a DJ announcing that we are headed to war in the Gulf. I was so pissed — about the song, not the Gulf. It is immediately followed by “Do the Bartman”. I bought the Walkman about six years ago because I wanted to see what was on my old mixed tapes (a 2020 pandemic clean up find) and I got some new blank cassettes too. I think I bought them off of Targets website but I have no idea if they’re there now. I’ve definitely seen blank cassettes at flea markets though.
Amazing! That Gulf War announcement is really a time capsule. I remember being really annoyed when they pre-empted Sister Sister on ABC with the OJ Bronco chase. I had no idea it was history in the making- I just wanted to watch Tia and Tamara!

I remember waiting all day to tape songs off the air and HATING it when the DJ would talk over the intro or end the song early 😭
