Hello to readers and subscribers new and old! Popping into your inbox this morning with a few quick updates, plus one ask.
First of all, I have a new podcast episode this morning with author
that is worth a listen. It’s Sarah’s second time on the show, her first appearance dating back to August, 2020. Of course we talk Trump and politics, but we also look deeper at American identity. I really hope you enjoy this conversation.I also wanted to share some news about my podcast episode from last fall with Akilah Hughes. Akilah was here to talk her new podcast Rebel Spirit that examines how her high school in northern Kentucky wound up with a Confederate mascot in the 1950s and why it retains the mascot to this day.
This was a personal conversation for me because, as I’ve written about before, I also went to a high school that continues to use the Rebel team name and was once steeped in Confederate symbolism. And this was a school in Northeast Ohio!
Rebel Spirit has been an amazing series to follow over the last few months, and now it’s up for a Webby award!
Voting is open through today (April 17) and is open to all.
As of yesterday, Rebel Spirit was in a close second place, so your vote could help put it over the top and help Akilah bring home a much deserved award for her work!
To vote, please follow this link (it only takes about 30 seconds): https://vote.webbyawards.com/PublicVoting#/2025/podcasts/limited-series-specials/diversity-equity-inclusion-belonging
